Betta Fish at the bottom of Tank Not Moving - Why?

 


Whether you have a female koi betta or a black male betta, they all are very active creatures. They spend most of their time swimming in warm water and move around quickly when they get colder. But what if the betta fish at bottom of tank not moving?

1.     Due to Sleeping

You may have noticed that your betta fish sleeps at the bottom of the tank. This is not a sign of illness or injury but rather a natural behavior for this species.

Betta fish sleep in various positions, including lying on their sides and even upside down on plants or gravel. They do this because it helps them conserve energy while resting and prevents them from getting disturbed by other tank inhabitants like you!

2.     Poor Eyesight

Several things can cause poor eyesight, but it's most often associated with internal parasites. This is because betta fish do not start with poor vision in their native habitats. It's only after they're brought into captivity that they develop this condition, which is why it's essential to keep an eye on your betta fish if you suspect he has poor eyesight.

Poor eyesight may also result from bacterial infections or medications that were given to your pet when he was younger, and these issues could also lead him to sink lower inside his aquarium.

3.     Constipation

Betta Fish may become inactive if they are constipated. A poor diet can cause constipation, so betta fish will avoid food and hide in the bottom of their tank. If you see that your betta fish is not eating, then it may have a stomach problem. You can try feeding him something like pellets or flakes once a day for one week to see if he starts eating again.

4.     Parasitic Attack

If a betta is suffering from internal parasites, it may be lethargic and spend much of its time at the bottom of the tank. This is not good for your betta fish because it can cause anorexia (loss of appetite), lethargy (lack of energy), and weight loss. Parasites can treat with medication recommended by a specialist.

As parasite completely feed from host, they are dangerous if remain in body for long. So, learn about the signs of parasitic infection and beware of them.

5.     Cold Water

Betta fish are tropical Fish, meaning they prefer warm water. They have a body temperature lower than that of humans and other animals and must be kept in an environment above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature drops below this threshold, betta fish will slow down or stop moving altogether. You can purchase an aquarium heater for your tank to ensure that your betta stays healthy regardless of the outside temperature.

Conclusion

Betta fish are beautiful and very easy to care for, but betta fish need their owners' attention. If you notice that your betta is sleeping or wandering around at the bottom of its tank, take it out immediately so that you can see if there is anything wrong with it. If not, simply enjoying these excellent tropical Fish will become much easier for all involved.
